Where to start looking

I cannot make up my mind about something that matters

You have made the list. Twice. It comes out roughly even, which is not the help you were hoping for.

You decide at night and undecide by the morning.

Everyone you ask has an opinion, and none of them have to live in it.

The options may not be the real choice

Two options that keep coming out level are often two versions of the same compromise. When that is the case, more analysis will not part them, because the thing that would part them is not on the list yet.

A decision cannot make something safe

Some choices refuse to settle because what is really being asked of them is a guarantee. No decision can supply that. Deciding what you are prepared to risk is a smaller question and an answerable one.

Not deciding yet is a legitimate position, once it is chosen

There is a difference between holding a decision open on purpose and being held by it. If waiting is the right call, it is worth saying what you are waiting for. If nothing would change by waiting, that is worth knowing too.

What this usually connects to

  • Who else is affected, and whether they know a decision is being made.
  • What you would lose in each direction, said plainly rather than weighed.

A question worth sitting with

  • Which version of this would you be able to explain to yourself in five years?

Talking it through tends to surface what the decision is really being asked to settle.

It is a conversation, not a questionnaire. You can stop at any point, and finishing it does not mean anything has to change.

If the question turns out to be a different one
