Where to start looking
Doing well at work and not happy
You got the thing. It was fine for about a week.
Saying any of this out loud sounds ungrateful, so you do not.
You keep waiting to feel the way the work is supposed to make you feel.
The feeling was attached to something else
Ambition often carries a hidden clause: when this happens, something else will follow. Recognition, safety, the sense of being finished. When the achievement arrives and the clause does not, the disappointment is easy to mistake for ingratitude.
Success can be somebody else's design
It is common to reach a target you set at twenty five for reasons that made sense at twenty five. The target did not update. You did.
This may not be a problem to solve
Some people read this feeling as a sign that everything must change. Sometimes it is a sign that one thing is missing and everything else is fine. Working out which is the entire job here.
What this usually connects to
- What you are getting from the work that you would miss immediately.
- Whether the flatness is only at work, or everywhere at the moment.
A question worth sitting with
- When did you last feel genuinely interested in something? What was it?
Mark
I have sat in rooms where everything on paper was going well and felt nothing at all. It took me a long time to stop treating that as a character fault.
The session starts with what is actually there rather than what should be.
Is this just a job?It is a conversation, not a questionnaire. You can stop at any point, and finishing it does not mean anything has to change.
If the question turns out to be a different one
