Money is always exchanged for something specific
Hours, attention, temper, health, evenings, the version of yourself your family gets. High pay usually means the exchange rate went up on one of those. Naming which one is the useful move.
What the money was for may have been achieved already
People earn towards a purpose, often security or proving something, and keep earning long after it landed. The engine outlives the reason.
Less money is not automatically the resolution
Sometimes it is a different shape of the same money. Sometimes it is spending it on something other than what it currently buys.
