Compound semiconductors

South Wales hosts a compound semiconductor cluster covering research, epitaxy, wafer fabrication and packaging in one region.

Satellite manufacturing

Glasgow builds small satellites, with spacecraft manufacturing, components and mission operations concentrated in the city.

Small satellites underpin earth observation, communications and defence sensing. Manufacturing capability keeps the value of a growing market onshore.

Advanced materials

Manchester runs a dedicated national institute for graphene and two-dimensional materials, alongside applied materials research.

Quantum

Quantum computing, sensing and communications research runs across Oxford, Bristol, Birmingham, Glasgow and Cambridge, with national facilities supporting it.

Engineering biology

Britain runs genomics at population scale and holds engineering biology research across Cambridge, Norwich, Manchester and Liverpool.

Engineering biology touches medicine, food, materials and industrial chemistry. The research base is unusually deep relative to national size.

Bristol and Edinburgh both operate large dedicated robotics laboratories with facilities open to industry.
