UK Innovation Zones

Britain doesn't have an ideas problem.

It has a coordination problem.

Britain has extraordinary universities, entrepreneurs, researchers, businesses, investors and talent.

Too often they operate separately.

UK Innovation Zones is an initiative exploring how we bring them together around the opportunities capable of creating Britain's next generation of growth.

Why now

The ingredients already exist.

  • World-class universities.
  • Deep scientific capability.
  • Entrepreneurial talent.
  • Global companies.
  • Capital.
  • Infrastructure.
  • Creative industries.

But ingredients don't create an ecosystem by themselves.

From proximity to possibility

Buildings don't innovate.
People do.

Physical places matter.

But the real opportunity comes from deliberately connecting entrepreneurs, established businesses, universities, researchers, investors and government around shared economic missions.

UKIZ explores how place can become the catalyst rather than the objective.

Mission

Everything else organises around the economic mission rather than around an institution, a building or a funding round.

The zones

Eleven zones.
Eleven economic missions.

Each zone will have its own page, built from the UKIZ strategy materials rather than invented here. Every zone answers the same five questions:

  • What could Britain lead?
  • What problem could we solve?
  • What capabilities already exist?
  • Who needs to be connected?
  • What would success look like?

Mark's role

Convening the people who can make it happen.

Mark Eve in conversation with founders in a natural setting

Mark's role is not to claim expertise in every technology or build every campus.

It is to bring together entrepreneurs, industry, capital, academia and government around opportunities where collaboration can create something none could achieve independently.

His career has repeatedly involved crossing markets, organisations and disciplines: building international businesses, creating partnerships and bringing people together around commercial opportunities.

UKIZ applies that experience to a bigger question: how do we increase Britain's capacity to turn ideas into economic growth?

Start small

Start with people.

Before infrastructure comes community.

UKIZ will begin by bringing together small groups around specific sectors and problems. Not conferences. Not networking for networking's sake. Focused groups of people who should know each other but often don't — entrepreneurs, operators, researchers, investors, corporates and policy makers.

Create useful collisions. Learn what happens. Build the strongest communities. Then give those communities somewhere to grow.
