Why this is backbone, not a mission

A university is not the property of one mission. The useful sequence runs the other way: mission, then relevant research capability, then university or research centre, then facilities, then companies and spin-outs, then commercialisation.

Mapping research this way stops UKIZ from claiming an institution for a place and starts it describing what each institution can contribute to which national opportunity.

Where relevant capability concentrates today

  • Research strength is distributed. Concentration exists, but every mission draws on institutions in more than one ecosystem.

Research excellence does not automatically imply commercialisation capacity. UKIZ records the two separately.
