Backbone capability 01
AI & Compute
Not a mission. An input to almost every mission.
Proposed by UKIZ · independent · not a government designation
Why this is backbone, not a mission
AI should not be treated as belonging to one UKIZ mission. It increasingly enables drug discovery, materials discovery, manufacturing, robotics, autonomy, defence, energy optimisation, agriculture, semiconductor design and space.
Treating AI as a sector produces an AI zone. Treating AI as a backbone capability produces AI applied inside eleven national opportunities, which is where the economic value is more likely to sit.
What UKIZ maps here
- AI companies and applied AI teams
- AI research groups and national institutes
- Compute capacity and access routes
- Data infrastructure and secure data environments
- AI talent and training routes
- Investors active in applied AI
- Government AI programmes, including AI Growth Zones
Where relevant capability concentrates today
- London — the deepest concentration of AI companies, capital and applied teams
- Cambridge and Oxford — foundational research and spin-out formation
- Edinburgh — data science, robotics and informatics depth
- Manchester and Bristol — applied AI in health, materials and autonomy
Compute availability, power connections and data access are the constraints most often reported. UKIZ has not yet verified which of these binds hardest by mission.
Missions that depend on this
Where this capability is needed.
Dependency is a judgement based on each mission's reported constraints, not a score. Critical means the mission is unlikely to progress without it.
