Backbone capability 02

Capital & Financial Services

Every mission requires a capital ladder, not a single funding round.

Proposed by UKIZ · independent · not a government designation

Why this is backbone, not a mission

Britain's financial services capability supports all eleven missions through capital, payments, risk, insurance, public markets, financing and fintech infrastructure.

London is represented here as a major national and international capital node — not as a standalone fintech mission. Fintech capability is retained in full within this backbone rather than occupying one of the eleven mission slots.

What UKIZ maps here

  • Angels and angel syndicates
  • SEIS and EIS investors
  • Venture capital
  • Corporate venture
  • Growth capital and private equity where relevant
  • Infrastructure capital and project finance
  • Public markets
  • Government-backed capital

Where relevant capability concentrates today

  • London — international capital, public markets, insurance and regulators
  • Edinburgh and Glasgow — asset management and financial services depth
  • Cambridge, Oxford and Bristol — specialist deep-tech and life science funds
  • Manchester, Leeds and Belfast — regional funds, angels and corporate finance

Stage gaps differ sharply by mission. Capital-intensive missions report first-of-a-kind plant finance as the binding constraint; software-adjacent missions more often report Series B.
