Backbone capability 07
Professional & Business Services
Enabling capability, not one of the eleven.
Proposed by UKIZ · independent · not a government designation
Why this is backbone, not a mission
Legal, tax, accounting, regulatory and corporate advisory capability determines how quickly a company can be formed, funded, protected and expanded. It rarely appears in innovation strategy and consistently appears in founder complaints.
It belongs in the backbone: universally needed, unevenly distributed, and cheap to connect relative to its effect.
What UKIZ maps here
- Legal and IP advisers
- Tax and accounting
- Regulatory and compliance specialists
- Recruitment and executive search
- Corporate services
- International expansion advisers
- Governance and board capability
Where relevant capability concentrates today
- London holds the deepest concentration; Manchester, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Leeds and Bristol carry substantial capability.
Access, cost and specialism matter more than proximity. A founder in Plymouth may be better served remotely by a specialist than locally by a generalist.
Missions that depend on this
Where this capability is needed.
Dependency is a judgement based on each mission's reported constraints, not a score. Critical means the mission is unlikely to progress without it.
